Kylea shares her week

week 23: Cutting vehicle emissions with our new Private Members Bill

Earlier this year, in the months before the election, I promised to develop and introduce a Private Member's Bill that would deliver better, cleaner fuel to Australians and reduce pollution from our cars. That Bill was tabled in Parliament this week.

North Sydney's Reducing Vehicle Pollution Bill will bring Australian fuel quality in line with European standards, reducing the levels of sulphur and aromatics that they can contain.

This is one of the quickest ways to make real change in the short term. There are currently over 20 million motor vehicles in Australia that are powered by internal combustion engines. These emit greenhouse gases and other noxious pollutants that can cause heart and lung disease and cancer — particularly in high-traffic areas like ours.

Improving the quality of Australian fuel will have an immediate impact on the emissions and efficiency of petrol and diesel-powered cars. As I said in Parliament on Monday, it's a win-win-win. Not only will we reduce Australia's transport emissions; we'll also save consumers money on fuel, reduce our nation's reliance on imported foreign oil, and see better health outcomes in our communities. ⁣

After a jammed packed fortnight in Canberra, the Secure Jobs, Better Pay Bill passed into law earlier today.

You might recall a few weeks ago, I secured an amendment to the Bill when it was debated in the House which saw an increased role for small and medium sized building and construction enterprises. I also acknowledge the amendments secured by crossbench Senators last night which go someway to addressing the concerns of North Sydney.

There’s no doubt the Bill is in better shape than it was just a few short weeks ago, but my concerns about the consequences of the ill-defined, rushed multi-employer bargaining provisions remain. And so, on balance, I could not support the Bill.

I will continue to work to ensure the Government takes the most immediate and effective action available to them to get wages moving for the lowest paid workers – and that is lifting the level of the underlying Awards.

Also this week I had the pleasure of launching the North Sydney Virtual Advent Calendar. This festive season, my team and I will be showcasing some of our local charities: organisations like Mary's House for victims of domestic violence, our generous Rotary branches, and Phoenix House which supports challenged young people in North Sydney.

We'll be profiling one charity a day on our Facebook and Instagram. I hope you'll join us in recognising and celebrating their incredible efforts and, should you have the means to do so, please consider donating to these organisations so that we as a community can support those who may be doing it tough at this time of year.

Week 21: What we're doing to strengthen the Anti-Corruption Bill

Our democracy will only ever be as strong as our willingness as citizens to actively contribute to any debate, and just on six months into this role, the capacity for me to truly listen to the many voices of North Sydney as they discuss proposed or needed legislative reform at the national level is without a doubt the most rewarding thing I get to do on a daily basis.
