Week 18: What the Budget Means for North Sydney

This week, my team and I have been hard at work determining what the newly released Federal Budget means for North Sydney's priorities, and what needs to be done to ensure government initiatives actually deliver the changes that our community wants to see.

At first glance, this budget appears very appropriate for the economic times we find ourselves in. There is some funding for childcare and parental leave, housing, and climate initiatives.

That said, the devil is going to be in the detail. Because while the government plans to fund some great initiatives that will support families, young Australians, and communities, those initiatives will not succeed without significant work in other areas.

Childcare is one example. I was pleased to see that the government has set aside $4.6 billion over four years to increase childcare subsidy rates. Childcare costs are particularly high in North Sydney, and the new subsidy rates are expected to benefit nearly 9,000 families in our community.

But — as I noted in Parliament — even if we make childcare more affordable, families will still face the issue of availability. There simply aren't enough places in local preschools and early childhood education centres to meet our community's needs. And there aren't enough educators. Across the country, an additional 16,000 childcare workers will need to be found if we are to deliver on the potential of cheaper childcare.

Thank you to all who have written in to share your thoughts on the Budget this week. As always, I'll continue to keep you updated on progress in the Parliament to ensure our voice in Canberra is heard.

This week you may also have received a letter in your mailbox about our Community Survey, which is now open. Please do put aside a couple of minutes to fill it in. I'd love to hear your ambitions and concerns for North Sydney so I can stay focused on what you want to see achieved.

Earlier this year, in the months before the election, I promised to develop and introduce a Private Member's Bill that would deliver better, cleaner fuel to Australians and reduce pollution from our cars. That Bill was tabled in Parliament this week.

North Sydney's Reducing Vehicle Pollution Bill will bring Australian fuel quality in line with European standards, reducing the levels of sulphur and aromatics that they can contain.

Our democracy will only ever be as strong as our willingness as citizens to actively contribute to any debate, and just on six months into this role, the capacity for me to truly listen to the many voices of North Sydney as they discuss proposed or needed legislative reform at the national level is without a doubt the most rewarding thing I get to do on a daily basis.
