Kylea shares her week

Week 13: Celebrating our bonds of citizenship

Tomorrow, on 17 September, we celebrate Australian Citizenship Day — an opportunity for us all to reflect on what it means to be Australian.

Whether we are Australians through birth or by choice, it is a day to take pride in our citizenship and celebrate our shared values. Values like democracy and a fair go for all, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ability or race.

Australia is a proudly multicultural country, and our North Sydney community is particularly diverse, with almost half of us born overseas and over a third speaking a language other than English at home.

We all contribute so much to our community, with diverse skills, cultures, traditions and dreams that strengthen and enrich this nation that we share.

So as we celebrate Citizenship Day this year, I urge you not only to reflect on your experiences as an Australian citizen, but also to consider your relationships with the people around you. I hope that you will join me in welcoming Australia's newest citizens, and ensuring North Sydney is an inclusive and respectful place for all.

I hope to see you out and about in the electorate this week, before I head back to Canberra for Parliamentary Sittings next Friday. Thanks as always for your feedback and support.

PS - I'll be doing a Street Meet tomorrow (Saturday, 17 September) at Lane Cove Plaza from 2pm-4pm.  I'd love for you to come down and have a chat with you about how I can help assist on the issues that matter to you and your family.

Earlier this year, in the months before the election, I promised to develop and introduce a Private Member's Bill that would deliver better, cleaner fuel to Australians and reduce pollution from our cars. That Bill was tabled in Parliament this week.

North Sydney's Reducing Vehicle Pollution Bill will bring Australian fuel quality in line with European standards, reducing the levels of sulphur and aromatics that they can contain.

Week 21: What we're doing to strengthen the Anti-Corruption Bill

Our democracy will only ever be as strong as our willingness as citizens to actively contribute to any debate, and just on six months into this role, the capacity for me to truly listen to the many voices of North Sydney as they discuss proposed or needed legislative reform at the national level is without a doubt the most rewarding thing I get to do on a daily basis.
