Week 110: The clock is ticking. Our work continues.
Kylea at a Climate Council briefing in Parliament House. The AEC has confirmed its decision to abolish our Federal Electorate of North Sydney at the next election. The clock is ticking. Our work continues. We've had some significant wins this week on genetic testing and paid parental leave — both major issues to members of our community. After many months working with ACT Senator David Pocock, public health advocates, medical practitioners and industry experts, I was delighted to finally have the government announce a complete ban on the use of genetic testing results in life insurance on Wednesday. Modern medicine has enabled people to learn more about their health than ever before. But as one local geneticist told my office, Australians have been opting against potentially lifesaving testing because they are afraid their results might affect their life insurance policies. The newly announced ban is a huge step forward, and I will be urging all members of parliament to urgently pass this bill when it is presented. I was also pleased to support the Government's introduction of superannuation payments on paid parental leave (PPL), which passed the House of Representatives on Thursday. This change will go some way towards narrowing the gender gap in superannuation and normalising parental leave for both women and men. At the same time, many in our electorate would like to see us go further. In a recent North Sydney community survey on parental leave reform, 100 per cent of respondents wanted superannuation to be added to PPL payments, and 75 per cent believed Australia's 22 weeks of PPL is too short, particularly against the OECD average of 39 weeks. It's clear more federal government leadership, coordination and support are needed to support parents in those critical first few months of a child's life, and access the childcare services they need to be able to eventually return to the workforce. I will continue pushing for progress. Watch this space for opportunities to participate in this important discussion. Check out my YouTube channel to catch up on what I had to say in Parliament this week on HECS reform, the (ultimately disappointing) Independent Parliamentary Standards Commission legislation, the ATO's treatment of small businesses, scams, and our Youth Forum discussion on cybersafety. With the Albanese Government planning to introduce its hotly debated under-16s social media ban this year, I’m keen to hear from more local parents and youth on this topic. Please join us at the North Sydney social media forum on Thursday 19 September if you can. Don’t forget to cast your vote in the NSW local elections this Saturday. Depending on your address, North Sydney residents will be voting for either the Hunters Hill, Lane Cove, Willoughby or North Sydney councils. You can find out more about the candidates here. Thank you to all candidates for running and thank you in advance to all who help strengthen our democracy by making an informed vote. Finally, a big thank you for the many messages of support that my team and I have received about the AEC's new electoral boundaries. In the 123 years since Federation, North Sydney has been instrumental in shaping Australian society. I can't wait to see what our community will now contribute to Warringah, Bradfield and Bennelong! - KTCOME AND MEET KYLEA |

"I continue to believe that the two major parties do not represent the best of us as a nation," Kylea says. "I believe all of us Australians have a responsibility to turn up and work together to try and make sure that the country that we leave for our kids is better than the country that we were born into." Technology-Facilitated Abuse: The Hidden Danger in our Digital Lives - North Shore Mums, 12 September 2024. Kylea urges parents to beware technology-facilitated abuse and to talk to their families about what respectful relationships and problematic behaviour looks like. MPs urge tougher standards for politicians acting badly - Canberra Times, 10 September 2024. Laws setting up an independent Parliamentary Standards Commission have passed the lower house, but some fear they may not be strong enough to truly enforce behavioural standards. Kylea says putting the parliamentary privileges committee in charge of sanctioning MPs "is like asking arsonists to put out their own fires, and means there is no guarantee that disciplinary actions will be impactful". Teals demand 75pc emissions cut target by 2035 ($) - The Australian, 10 September 2024. “Our country’s 2035 emissions target must be in line with global efforts to achieve the Paris Agreement goal of keeping warming below two degrees Celsius," Kylea says. “Anything less than an ambitious, legislated 2035 target would not only be detrimental to our economy, the cost of living and our environment, but would ultimately be a slap in the face to future generations.” Watered down parliamentary watchdog ‘doesn’t pass the pub test’ - The Guardian, 10 September 2024. The Albanese government has been accused of watering down its proposed independent parliamentary standards commission. "Politics seems to have gotten in the way of a better outcome here and I don’t believe the majority of Australians would be satisfied by that," Kylea says. Kylea Tink questions government on ATO debt collection processes - The Guardian, 9 September 2024. Kylea rose in Question Time on Monday to ask about the 'ATO’s aggressive debt enforcement action' against small businesses. Treasurer Jim Chalmers responded: 'We know it’s a tough time for them. And we want the ATO to recognise that as well' 'Urgency and directness’: Inside Labor’s courting of the teal independents - The Saturday Paper, 7 September 2024. Politics was changed in the 47th parliament in a way the major parties are still grappling with. “I do think that the government has made a concerted effort to recognise the potential of people like myself in the House," Kylea says. "I’m not saying I’m getting preferential treatment at all, but I think I would describe it as a constructive relationship.” |
