Week 123: My future in politics and our commitment to keep fighting

Kylea with Nicolette and team at Saturday's announcement

As you would have heard by now, last Saturday I announced that I have decided not to run for a seat in the House of Representatives at the 2025 federal election.

This was not an easy decision, but ultimately I believe it is in the best interests of the community independent movement and my family for me to explore other ways in which I can support this movement across the country.

Importantly, I want to thank you for your overwhelming support over the last three years. This term of Parliament has shown how powerful community-led representation can be, and I'm excited to continue to support incredible people like Zali Steggall in Warringah and Nicolette Boele in Bradfield.

With that all said however, with potentially another 5 months left in this there is still much work to be done, and I remain committed to pushing the government to deliver on their promises and do better for our community and generations to come.

Human Rights Day this week was a compelling reminder of how important our advocacy remains, with Australia still one of the only Western democracies without a national Human Rights Act. Ultimately, while we may get lost in the minutiae of how we should address things like housing access, gender equality and the treatment of people seeking asylum, a simple truth is that an overarching Human Rights Act would go long a way to fundamentally addressing many of the key factors underlying these challenges. It’s past time we caught up to the rest of the world and ensured the International Treaties we so readily sign are brought into our domestic law.

As the week closed out then, I was pleased to hear the Albanese government announce their plan to scrap the childcare activity test, meaning every family earning under $530,000 would have access to three days of subsidised childcare going forward. With families in our community paying some of the most expensive childcare fees in the country, and even then, spaces limited, access to affordable childcare is something I have been pushing for from day 1. At the same time, a recent Deliberative Democracy Forum that we hosted here in North Sydney on this issue, overwhelmingly saw the upside in abolishing the Activity Test. Follow this link to read that full report.

With Christmas just around the corner, this will actually be our last e-newsblast for 2024 while our team takes a hard-earned break over the summer.

In the meantime, please keep an eye out on our socials these next few days as we launch another year of our 12 Days of Christmas campaign, and know we will be back in your inboxes from Friday 17th January.

Wishing everyone a restful and peaceful festive season.

- KT

IN THE NEWS

Albanese signs up to $1.3b childcare fix economists have recommended for years - The Sydney Morning Herald, 10 December 2024. In great news, the Albanese government have announced they will abolish the childcare activity test, giving every family earning under $530,000 three days of subsidised childcare. Kylea has been an active advocate in this space, holding a deliberative democracy forum in October to hear the community's concerns and input from policy experts.

Teals' 'true colours' are green, Coalition says after new analysis of voting records - The Daily Telegraph, 10 December 2024. Independent MPs have hit back at criticism from Paul Fletcher that they vote with the Greens in the lower house. Kylea said, “On 100 per cent of occasions I have voted in a way that is consistent with my community’s expectations and ambitions … And importantly I’ve voted significantly more frequently than the Member for Bradfield who, despite being the Opposition Manager for the House, hardly ever attends a vote.”

Kylea's Call - Channel 10 News, 8 December 2024. Kylea’s decision not to run in the House of Representatives at the next election has been covered extensively over the weekend by several news channels, including Channel 10 below.

Liberals need to win back friends in the heartland - The Sydney Morning Herald, 7 December 2024. Saturday's SMH editorial says Bradfield Liberal MP Paul Fletcher’s woes have been worsened by the decision of Kylea Tink to throw her backing behind Boele and that the teal wave will be even bigger at the next election. Thirty candidates are already waiting in the wings.

'Like a child throwing toys from his cot': Kylea Tink lashes Liberal MP - The Sydney Morning Herald, 7 December 2024. In a front page story on her decision and the ‘genteel transfer’, Kylea talks up the teal movement, saying it will continue to expand and threaten the major parties’ dominance. “I absolutely believe the legislation that has gone through is better because of the input we have provided.”
