Australians are divided over government proposals to ban social media for children under the age of 16. Some say a ban would help shield vulnerable young people from harmful content and the negative effects of spending too much time online. Others say a ban is unenforceable, and would exacerbate feelings of loneliness and isolation among those most in need.
Join Kylea Tink MP and a panel of youth mental health and media experts for an intergenerational forum about the impacts of social media on our North Sydney community. We'll be digging through the scientific evidence, expert opinions and the experiences of young Australians and their carers to better understand the benefits and challenges of social media, and how best these can be addressed.
Young Australians aged between 12 and 19 are encouraged to attend with at least one of their parents/carers, so that we can facilitate a frank and open discussion about a potential social media ban and other potential solutions to the challenges we face.
Panelists:
- Kylea Tink, Independent Federal Member for North Sydney
- Professor Jo Robinson AM, Head of Suicide Research, Orygen
- Ben Bartlett, Director of Government Relations and Communications, ReachOut
- Suzanne Dick, CEO, Prevention United
