Deliberative Democracy
“The very basis of democracy is that a decision taken by the public as a whole will be right more often than decisions taken by an elite group…” - Ted Mack
Deliberative democracy is a form of community consultation where citizens engage in well-informed, deep and robust discussion to make political decisions. Under this model, relatively small but representative groups of people work collaboratively to come to a consensus and make judgements on specific issues. This leads to better, more well-rounded outcomes, as opposed to making decisions based on an aggregate of individually held opinions.
In line with her promise to "do politics differently", Kylea Tink convened three successful deliberative democracy forums during her term as Independent Federal Member for North Sydney. Each of these forums brought together a randomly selected, demographically representative group of local residents to tackle a complex social or economic issue, and ultimately deliver a policy recommendation for Kylea to advocate for at a national level.
