Week 88: Progress in North Sydney and promising developments overseas
|
Kylea at the Signature Orthopaedics headquarters in North Sydney. |
It was wonderful to see so many faces at our live post-parliamentary community update on Tuesday. There was lots to discuss this month, from the Government's problematic migration bill, to the ambiguously named "Safety and Other Measures" amendments for offshore oil and gas and what that means for our environmental law. You can watch a recording of the update here. My team and I have spent much of this week meeting with North Sydney residents and businesses, answering any queries and peppering them with questions of our own to find out what we can do to better support our electorate. On Thursday, we caught up with residents of the Greenway social housing complex and were pleased to be able to address some of the requests for support that were raised during our last visit, and to hear more from the people there. I also met with a number of very interesting local businesses throughout the week, including global engineering firm Worley and medical device manufacturer Signature Orthopaedics. From heavy manufacturing to 24/7 wind farm monitoring, these businesses have set up some very impressive facilities within otherwise unassuming office buildings in our electorate. On the issues front, I was interested to see the news of the European Court of Human Rights' ruling that the Swiss Government had violated fundamental human rights by failing to comply with its duties to stop climate change. While the Morrison government narrowly dodged a similar ruling back in 2022, this ECHR decision shows that our government needs to do so much more to fulfill its moral obligation to the Australian people. I will continue to advocate for laws that will both help protect our environment and enable us to hold the government to account and will make a big push on this front in the week ahead. Stay tuned! Many in our electorate were also pleased to see reports that US President Joe Biden is considering Australia's request to drop charges against Julian Assange. Whistleblowers are essential to a healthy democracy, and Julian Assange has been persecuted for his publication of government documents on Wikileaks for far too long. Our community of North Sydney has consistently pushed for his release. I will keep the pressure on as deliberations continue overseas. For all who shared your stories with me this week: thank you for your time. As a community independent, I rely on your input to know how best to represent our electorate so please do keep that feedback coming! - KT |

POWERING TO NET ZERO: STRATA APARTMENT ELECTRIFICATION |
It's not always easy for apartment dwellers to electrify their households. But Chatswood resident Brian has shown that it can be done by leading the charge in installing rooftop solar and an electric heat pump water system for his 48-unit strata apartment block. After engaging an independent consultant to identify suitable systems and quotes, a 30kW solar system was installed in September 2021 with a matching three-phase inverter. This solar system supplies most of the electricity for the common areas and has an estimated payback period of only 3.8 years When it came time to replace the building's ageing gas hot water system, the Owners Corporation decided to leverage its investment in solar by switching to an industrial heat pump. Brian and his wife have gone a step further in their own apartment by replacing their gas cooktop with an induction cooktop in 2022. Well done, Brian, for Powering to Net Zero Energy with our community! |

IN THE NEWS |
SBS World News segment on the rental crisis - SBS, 11 April. Kylea speaks with SBS about house rental prices, which rose at a new record pace last quarter. While some say the market may be near a tipping point, Kylea believes more needs to be done to improve housing affordability in Australia. Watch from the 37'10" mark. The crossbench and the environment - Pearls and Irritations, 10 April. After attending the "The Future of Our Environment" panel discussion in North Sydney, Jocelyn Chey writes that neither the government nor the opposition are taking effective climate action — but voters, at least in this part of the country, feel passionately about it. From boots to ballots: Kylea Tink's political path - Coonabarabran Times, 4 April. "Democracy is only as strong as the people who turn up for it, and every politician should be answerable to community," Kylea says. "Being an independent is empowering because ... I am not in it for a career, or to win favours, or to put myself ahead. I am 100 per cent for the community." |
