Week 124: Important local updates and a global call for action on climate & peace
Kylea supporting the Solar Citizens petition for a Renewable Energy Storage Target |
Welcome back all! I hope you all had a chance to relax over the holidays as we dive into what promises to be a busy final few months as the federal seat of North Sydney. We have a few important updates on the local front. Firstly, in case you missed it late last year, the SBS studios in Artarmon are here to stay! This is a great outcome as the studios are an important part of our community: employing many and reflecting our own diverse nature. I want to particularly thank both our local Willoughby Mayor – Cr Tanya Taylor and her team, and the local State MP – Tim James, for their combined support as we fought for this outcome. In some not great news though, we have only recently learned of Australia Post’s planned closure of the Artarmon Post Office. In the time since we were first notified, we have been in direct contact with the Australia Post team and are in the process of negotiating a briefing. At the same time we are also working with Cr Anna Greco to help drive a community petition calling for the service to be maintained. You will find both a hard copy of the petition on business counters around Artarmon and here online: petition. The intention is for the contents of these petitions to be tabled in the February sitting weeks in Canberra, so we don’t have a lot of time to get as many signatures as possible. With that said, I do not want to create false hope that we will be able to retain this service – particularly at its current location – as Australia Post is arguing that the foot traffic into the location is significantly down (at around 25% or previous use) and that, with 15 other postal service locations within a 5 km radius, those most affected will have other options. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try and get a different outcome, so let’s see what we can do. As the fires raged in LA, earlier this week Copernicus announced that 2024 was the hottest year on record, and the first year to exceed 1.5C of warming over pre-industrial levels. How many records need to be broken before government’s around the world – including our own – take the threat of climate change seriously? We cannot afford to delay meaningful action any longer, as the impacts of climate change are being felt right now. It’s clear we must act decisively to protect our environment, communities, and future generations with urgency, so I thank you for continuing to ensure your voice is heard. And finally, while we have seen a glimmer of hope in these last few days with a ceasefire agreement being negotiated between Israel and Hamas, I want to take this opportunity to say that, while we should all welcome this progress, we must also recognise it will not in and of itself stop the abhorrent rise in racism that we have seen across our country. Having met with the Race Discrimination Commissioner – Giridharan Sivaraman, earlier this week, I am calling on both major parties and each of us as individuals to commit ourselves to stamping out racism wherever and whenever we see it. Frighteningly, following a briefing from our security services late last year, it would seem the most common perpetrators of racist acts are young, well-educated white Australians who come from affluent backgrounds, so it is inherent on us all to be ever vigilant as we seek to foster tolerance and compassion in our community. Please visit the link here to read my full statement on this matter. It’s vital that we, as a community, a country and importantly as individuals, dedicate ourselves to ridding our society of this scourge. Every Australian has the right to feel safe and accepted for all that they are – and I will absolutely fight to ensure this is the reality for all. And a commitment such as that is not woke – it’s simply aspiring to be all that I know we can be. Looking ahead, with Australia Day and Lunar New Year fast approaching, please keep an eye on our website and socials for local events and celebrations – I hope to see you there! - KT |
