Week 131: The importance of making connections

Community members making connections at our final Ageing Well event.

This week, my team brought together over 60 North Sydney seniors for our final Ageing Well event about the importance of staying socially active as we age. As lives get busier and more interactions move online, loneliness and isolation has become a growing issue among older Australians, raising the risk of heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline.

Thank you to COTA NSW, Carers’ Circle, and the many community group organisers who helped facilitate the event on Thursday. From sporting clubs to musical groups, gardening and board games, we are fortunate to have so many active and inclusive social groups here in our community. Many hold regular events that are advertised on council websites. I encourage you to look out for something that interests you, and get involved!

Sadly, I have been down with COVID this week and have been isolating at home. It's been nearly five years since our first COVID lockdown, but I assure you the virus is very real, and still hitting hard. This bout of COVID has been my worst yet, and I can only imagine how tough it might have been on someone who is very young, with underlying health issues, or is older. So as we approach the cold and flu season once again please do remember that if you feel unwell, stay home, get tested, and help protect the vulnerable in our community by isolating if you can.

My team has very capably held the fort while I've been unwell, attending meetings and continuing to aid constituents with visa, NDIS, social services, accommodation and other issues. Believe it or not, over the past three years we've handled over 18,390 matters for people in our community, working tirelessly to resolve nearly 125 cases every week. To Claudia, Rach and Carolyn, you are incredible. Thank you.

Thank you also to those across the electorate who have participated in Climate Action Week. I see you, and share your frustration that we're still having to fight for the basics: a clear national plan to reach Net Zero; targets and timelines to end coal and gas; serious investment in future-focused jobs and industries; strong fuel efficiency standards; and real support for communities and workers through the transition. Industry and government must step up. We can’t keep relying on individuals to do all the heavy lifting.

Here's to us changing the climate in Canberra.

P.S. Will you join us for International Women's Day Breakfast on Wednesday? The brilliant Catherine Fox will be facilitating a panel discussion between Redlands' Sean Corcoran, Cheek Media's Hannah Ferguson, Zali Steggall MP and myself, about how people of all genders can help advance rights, equality and empowerment for all women and girls. There are just a handful of tickets still up for grabs — get in quick!
