Week 130: Mardi Gras and our final few events

Happy Mardi Gras, North Sydney! This week, I had the privilege of joining our LGBTQIA+ community and allies once again on the Independents for Inclusion float. It was wonderful to have so many people come together from all walks of life in support of LGBTQIA+ pride and inclusion.

With police, community groups and some of Australia's largest corporations marching in this year's parade, it's clear that we've made great strides in diversity and inclusion over the past 47 years. We must not take this for granted. It is up to us all to continue progressing the rights of all Australians, and working towards a society where people of all backgrounds and genders belong.

In other news, the Albanese Government has promised to finally deliver an urgent care clinic in Chatswood if they are re-elected this year. This is a win for our electorate, which currently has one of the lowest rates of bulk billing in the country — an issue I’ve been calling out since entering parliament.

The promised Medicare Urgent Care Clinic (UCC) will provide bulk-billed urgent care for minor fractures and sprains, eye and ear problems, mild burns, UTIs and other such infections or injuries. This will take the pressure off the Royal North Shore Hospital emergency department, reducing wait times and giving locals a bulk-billed alternative to more costly private care. You can find out more about Medicare UCCs and the services they provide here.

It was also good to catch up with many of you on Zoom for what was likely my last ever parliamentary debrief as the Federal Member for North Sydney. As we near the end of 124 years as an electorate, including a huge three years as an independent seat, I cannot thank you enough for your support. In case you missed it, you can watch a recording here.

I'm looking forward to hosting our electorate's final Deliberative Democracy Forum this Sunday, and exploring ways for the Federal Government to improve the long-term viability of small businesses. Registrations are still open for my final Ageing Well event next Thursday and International Women's Day Breakfast on Wednesday 19 March. I'm looking forward to seeing you at either of those events or out in our electorate soon!
