Week 90: Lest we forget

Kylea marking Anzac Day at the North Sydney War Memorial. |
Anzac Day is a day when we commemorate the men and women who fought for our nation in World War 1 and all conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations since. This week, I marked the occasion by attending services in Hunters Hill, Chatswood, Willoughby Park, and North Sydney. It was a pleasure to be able to join our community in honouring those who have so bravely served our nation, and sharing some of the stories that have been passed down through our families. It has now been 109 years since our soldiers landed on the Gallipoli peninsula in their first major campaign as the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. The stories they brought back were harrowing and many found it difficult to reconcile the horrors of war with the realities of life at home. As we remember our soldiers, their sacrifices, and the courage, endurance and mateship that have all become part of the ANZAC legacy, we must also remember the lessons of war. War takes a toll on us all: on those who risk injury or death as soldiers and bear the physical and mental scars in the years that follow; on their families and loved ones; and on the many civilians facing violence through no choice of their own. In that context, I hope that we can honour those who have sacrificed so much for us by continuing to build on their achievements, towards a better and more peaceful future. Lest we forget. - KT |

Tink pushes right of appeal on federal environmental decisions - North Sydney Sun, 21 April. Kylea has pushed to enshrine the public’s right to appeal federal environmental decisions with the launch of a new report, commissioned by Lock the Gate Alliance and written by Professor Kim Rubenstein and Associate Professor Joel Townsend, in Parliament House. Labor’s broken promise on environment protection laws - The Saturday Paper, 20 April. Kylea has criticised the government's new "staged approach" to its once-in-a-generation overhaul of the Environment Protection Biodiversity and Conservation (EPBC) Act, noting that more complex, necessary and contentious elements of the Government's original plan have been relegated to a “third stage” with no set date for their introduction to parliament. |
