The Albanese government will structure the first fortnight of parliament to satisfy demands by the teal independents that they will be able to join the debate on Labor’s climate change legislation.
The bill to legislate a 43 per cent emissions reduction target by 2030, as well as net zero emissions by 2050, will be a priority for the new government when parliament first sits.
North Sydney MP Kylea Tink told The Sydney Morning Herald last week she and her fellow teals would be disempowered if they were unable to participate in the debate.
“Without us being empowered to have a voice in parliament, there is actually nobody speaking on that day for our communities,” she said.
