Week 125: Community wins!
Launch of the Cammeray Community Battery |
A wonderful week out and about in our community, commencing with the launch of the Cammeray Community Battery on Tuesday where I joined Minster Bowen, Zali Steggall, the Ausgrid team and representatives from across the community including our Powering to Net Zero team. As we discussed on the day, while it doesn’t rain every day, we still have ready access to water! In the same vein then, batteries have a crucial role to play in the transformation of our energy system by allowing excess solar energy to be stored for families and households to use during peak times. Around 350 local families will now save approximately $200 per year on their energy bills by harnessing and sharing excess rooftop solar energy. That is definitely something to celebrate. Special thanks to Scott and Jack who helped us turn the battery on! It was also a real pleasure to join 97 year-old Jenova Fernandez to share a cup of tea and for me to hear some of the stories from across her life . As many of you know, both of my grandmothers played really important roles in my early years and, as a result, I have always respected and enjoyed time with the wisest among us! It is a privilege to spend precious time with our most senior constituents, and to hear the wonderful stories that long and rich lives hold. With Australia Day taking place this weekend then, I encourage everyone to focus on what unites us rather than what divides us as we celebrate the gift that it is to be Australian —our shared values of respect, inclusivity, and community. We have a uniquely multicultural nation that celebrates diversity and thrives on the strength of our differences, and I am proud to be Australian. Personally I am very much looking forward to joining everyone at the Willoughby City Council Citizenship Ceremony – the largest in our electorate – to welcome the newest members of our community and to celebrating all of those that will receive Australia Day Honours. And with Lunar New Year coming up next Wednesday, I wish you all renewal and prosperity as we welcome the year ahead. There will be plenty of celebrations happening across the electorate, so please keep an eye out to see if there are any you’d like to attend. As an aside, please remember that our electorate of North Sydney continues to exist all the way through until the day the next federal election is called so until then, for myself and my team, it’s business as usual. This week then we have been busy, consulting with community representatives from councils to assist in finalising nominations for the 2024-25 Volunteer Grant. Applicants should know by the middle of next week whether they have been successful or not. Meanwhile the EOI for Round 9 of the Stronger Communities Program is open! Please contact my office if you wish to discuss eligibility. And finally, next week also brings the beginning of a new school year and I want to take the opportunity to wish all students and teachers the very best for a productive and happy start to the school year. - KT |
