Week 111: Have your say on Early Childhood Education and Care
Kylea at the Northern Suburbs Netball Association Grand Finals earlier this month. Australia’s Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) system is broken. It’s inaccessible and unaffordable, with couples paying two-thirds more of their wages for childcare than the OECD average. Here in North Sydney, parents pay up to $200 per child per day, and still struggle to secure suitable spots for their kids. It's holding back our economy. Without reliable ECEC, parents — predominantly women — are locked out of the workforce. According to the Australia Institute in 2022, we're missing out on an estimated $168 billion in national GDP by failing to provide Nordic-style universal care. And it's fundamentally unfair. 90 per cent of a child’s brain development happens by age 5, but ECEC simply isn’t an option for many Australian families, particularly those who are already socioeconomically disadvantaged. How can we claim to be delivering a "fair go" for all Australians if 1 in 5 children are going into primary school already behind We need to strengthen our ECEC sector, and we need your help. Next month, my team and I will host our second deliberative democracy forum, bringing together a small, randomly selected group of North Sydney residents to consider the evidence and come up with an ECEC policy proposal for Federal Parliament. Please check your mail to see if you have been selected for the forum. RSVPs close on Tuesday. If you have not been selected this time round, I still do want to hear from you. What ECEC challenges have you experienced and what do you think we should do to strengthen the sector? Please submit your feedback and ideas here. Congratulations to everyone who stood in last week's council elections, for helping to strengthen our democracy by giving the public an option to vote for. It was great to see our community engaged in important conversations about issues, candidates and their policies in recent weeks. Finally, thank you as always for working with me towards a stronger, fairer, prosperous Australia — particularly those who attended our community forum on the proposed social media ban last night. It was incredibly helpful to have parents, young Australians, and youth mental health experts all together in one room, discussing potential solutions in an open and constructive way. If there's one thing I took away from TeamTINK's Community Celebration in Longueville last weekend, it's that our community remains absolutely dedicated to a better way of doing politics. And we still have so much to give. As I said on Sunday, the AEC's decision is not the end of our Independent North Sydney. It's just the end of the beginning! - KTHAVE YOUR SAY |
The North Sydney Childcare Forum is seeking practical and effective policy solutions to improve the affordability and accessibility of Early Childhood Education and Care. We'd love to hear from you: to improve ECEC affordability and accessibility, what’s the one big policy idea that you think we should push Canberra to consider? Have your say here. |

VALE LEX MARINOS |
As an iconic Australian actor in the cult TV series Kingswood Country, Lex Marinos was a fundamental part of my childhood. But it's what he was like in real life that I will remember best. Lex was incredibly compassionate, passionate, intelligent and loyal. He was there from the beginning supporting our fight to make North Sydney independent again. I was so grateful for his support, wisdom and counsel. Lex's respect for First Nations culture, dedication to Australian arts, and love for his family, friends and community ensured he was someone who was deeply loved, and someone who will be dearly missed. To Anne, their family and friends, I offer my condolences, love and support. While we are all better for having known Lex, the world is a little sadder for having lost him. Vale Lex Marinos. |
