Week 103: Conversations that connect generations

Kylea and key players from the Wellbeing & Prevention Coalition with students at Session 2 of the Youth Forum on Wednesday

The value of young people’s engagement in democracy should never be underestimated, with our second Youth Forum, hosted on Wednesday, reminding me again how important it is to ensure those who are closest to the issues you are discussing are always in the room to be heard.

With the assistance of key players in the Wellbeing and Prevention Coalition, (those being the Black Dog Institute and The University of Sydney’s Matilda Centre), we came together to explore all things related to young people’s mental wellbeing, with a specific focus on the role of schools and social media.

The conversation was incredibly informative and more than anything really brought home to me the need to make sure we are having conversations that flow across generations. If you have a spare 5 minutes, we would appreciate your input on the following survey we're conducting to better understand the potential harmful impacts of social media on young people - click here to access.

Building intergenerational understanding will be key to tackling a multitude of issues we are currently facing so watch this space for news of potential community workshops where we seek to facilitate just that.

Ultimately, young Australians care about how they’re being represented in government, and you can see their investment time and time again whether it’s at forums, during school visits or attending events.

There's no better example of this than the Our Future Your Duty concert this Sunday 28th! Come and witness the passion and spirit of our youth first-hand, and hear activist Anjali Sharma speak about the importance of an accountable government with a clear responsibility to build a sustainable future for generations to come.

The forecast for the day is sunny with a chance of reform, so please grab a picnic blanket, outdoor chair, some snacks, refillable water bottles and a friend (or three) and head down to the Amphitheatre at St Leonard’s Park, (next to North Sydney Oval) to enjoy a day of free live music from some incredible young and emerging local artists including Ruby Jackson, Astrovan, Rosemary and Sweet Baby Darlings.

Meanwhile, for all the baby boomers out there – the Northern Sydney Local Health District and USYD have begun recruiting participants for their survey to assess expectations for aged care services and accommodation infrastructure amongst more mature Australians. If you meet the criteria, I strongly encourage you to take 15 minutes out of your day to complete the survey, as your input could provide valuable information to better these facilities. Click this link to find out if you’re eligible, and then if you are, please email [email protected] if you’re interested in participating.

Ultimately, effective decision-making requires input from people across all stages of life, and I am committed to continue fostering these conversations to ensure all voices are heard.

- KT

BREAKING NEWS: PUBLIC HEARING LIKELY!

Thank you to all who have written in about the Australian Electoral Commission's (AEC) proposal to abolish our Federal Seat of North Sydney in the next election. Today, the AEC has informed a local news outlet that it is likely they will hold a public inquiry into their draft plan.

So thank you – to everyone who has spoken up to date and please watch this space for further news.

Meanwhile, if you have not yet done so, please know you still can visit the AEC website and make comments on the submissions they have already received – at least until the end of play today.

In particular you may wish to check out my submission (Submission 686), Zali Stegall’s submission (Submission 671) or any of the other ones that specifically suggest alternative approaches to the abolition of North Sydney.

We set out to change the climate in Canberra and we are doing just that by ensuring we actively engage in our democracy fully and robustly. I’m sure the AEC would expect no less from us now so thank you for continuing to pursue this audacious goal with me.

COME AND MEET KYLEA
