Week 76: Best wishes for the festive season

Kylea out and about in North Sydney.

What a year it has been! Thanks to the passion and support of this community, North Sydney has continued to fight for the progress we want to see on climate change, political integrity, our economy, our communities and equality for all.

We took a stance in the Voice referendum, with 3 in 5 North Sydneysiders voting for a more inclusive Australia. We were instrumental in the introduction of a draft Parliamentary Code of Conduct to address longstanding cultural issues, including the problematic treatment of women, within Parliament House, and we have continued to advocate for improved standards and call actions out when they are not acceptable.

With the support of our incredible volunteers, we hosted the inaugural Clean Energy North Sydney Fair and launched Powering to Net Zero North Sydney to help households in our area make the switch to renewables.

In Parliament, we not only hosted important roundtables on Youth Mental Health and Women's Safety but also successfully advocated for the reinstatement of the Single Parents Payment until the youngest child is 14 and introduced important new Private Members Bills – including the Immigration Reform Bill – along with advocacy around important Motions.

We also ran our first ever Deliberative Democracy community forum to look into solutions to the housing crisis. You can read more about the forum and its outcomes here. With this event having been so successful, please watch out for news next year as we adopt this format as a standard way for us to develop our priority policy positions.

As we head into the festive season, I hope that you get the opportunity to relax, connect with your loved ones, and appreciate this beautiful area that we are so lucky to be able to call home.

A very special thank you to the emergency, healthcare and council workers who have supported our community all year, and an extra special thank you to those who will continue working over the festive season to keep us all safe, our public spaces clean and our essential services running. Please know your service is not taken for granted and we are very grateful to you for the work that you do.

Finally, thank you also to the teachers and educators in our community for their dedication, guidance and care of our children. I was delighted this week to attend a number of end-of-year school functions and to hear of the fantastic achievements of our local schools and students in the HSC. Congratulations to all of our students but especially to those moving from Year 6 into High School next year, and to our incredible Year 12s. Your families and the many educators who have helped you get to this point deserve our gratitude and admiration as to get here is a massive achievement. I share the excitement in what’s to come in your future, and as always am looking forward to seeing the leaders you will become.

Happy Holidays, North Sydney. It has been my absolute privilege to represent you this year. This is our last email update for 2023, with newsletters resuming on 27 January. The electorate office will close for the period from 22 December to 8 January.

HAVE YOUR SAY: STAGE 3 TAX CUTS

Stage 3 tax cuts, due to come into effect in July 2024, will reduce tax rates for those earning between $45,000 and $200,000. The cuts are part of the Morrison Government’s plan to stimulate the economy and address “bracket creep”.

The Albanese Government has promised to keep the tax cuts as planned but the cuts have been controversial. I would like to know what you think — please complete the survey here.
